Deputy Joe Peterson understood the risks when he got involved with ex-con Kabe Varghese. He didn't, however, see fit to warn Kabe. Ain't nothing likethe mountain air first thing in the morning. As I swung out of my newdepartment issue Explorer, I could almost taste the first touch ofsnow on my tongue. Wouldn't be long before winter hit. That meantskiing, Christmas and snuggling up next to my Kabe's fine body undera layer of quilts. Not that I needed much excuse to do that. Three,sometimes four, nights a week he spent over at my place...and boydidn't the gossips like to pass that bit around.

No sense ruining myday thinking on that.

I headed on into theoldest dinner in Panguitch, nodding as I walked into the cafÃ© andgetting a round of grunts and, "Hi, Joe." in return . A few other folks I said howdy to even though I knew I'd get nothingbut glares back. Didn't mean I still shouldn't be polite. Slid intomy usual booth in the back corner so's I could watch everyone comingand going. I didn't bother to order nothing. Jane, at the frontcounter, just always seemed to know what I was in the mood for andbrought it on out to me.

A knot of menclustered around the big table, all of them with heads down andtrading low whispers. If'n I didn't know every last one of them andwhat they were up to, I'da been suspicious. But they all either madetheir living off the big hunts or liked to pretend they did. Huntingseason meant stingy strategy sessions rivaling those of warringnations. Everyone trying to figure what each other knew about wherethe game was and each trying not to let spill what he'd figuredalready.

After a few bitesinto my pancakes, I caught Carl Haley standing up out of the group ofhunting guides and wannabes. He stretched. He hemmed and hawed a bitabout going. Then he pulled out a few bills, tossed them on the tableand...

...walked out.

I actually droppedmy fork. Slipped right out of my hand. I think the big table, well,all them just froze in place halfway through whatever they was at.See, 'cause all that play outta Carl, at this time in September,usually prefaced him sauntering on back, sliding into the oppositeside of the booth and grinning out, "So, seen any deer lately,deputy?"

Going on fiveseasons of that-me being something of an informant of sorts. Camewith my job and being up and around long before the butt crack ofdawn driving my patrol route along the highways and roads in a countythat didn't have hardly one person for every square mile of land.

Elk, deer, moose;saw 'em all the time, everywhere. And I kept it in my head and gaveit off to Carl from about start of fall on through hunting season.For that, I always had a little bit of something in my freezer , and if I got a permit in the local lottery then Carl would take meout.

I cain't say how iteven hit me right then. My mind just kept backfiring on how he'dpretty publicly snubbed not only me, but a decent professionalassociation. And Carl wasn't even a member of the Latter Day Saints,just a cowboy, one who apparently let his prejudices rule his wallet.Sorta set me down into this whirlpool of really black thoughts. Mosttimes something like this happened-you know after everything hit thefan about me liking guys and shacking up with an ex-con pretty boyand getting excommunicated-I managed to just stick it in my pocket.But there's those you expect it from , and then those that hit you blindside.

Carl caught me offguard.

As I'm all wrappedup in that, staring at a plate of pancakes that are getting lessappetizing by the moment, I heard somebody's butt slide into thebooth. "Morning, Joe." Rough voice, paved like country roadasphalt and varnished with years of smoke-Randy Small. I looked up.He saluted me with his coffee mug. "Mind if I join you?"
"Sure you wantto?" Yeah, I was right ready to dive into a little pity party.

"If Carl'sgoing to let his uptight ass keep him from good info..." With aroll of his eyes, Randy let the rest of that thought slide on by. Hetook a few swigs of his coffee. Me, I just tried to remember how tobreathe again. Finally, Randy grunted, "Your flapjacks aregetting cold."

I pushed them away."Not all the hungry right now." The whole thing soured mystomach even if Carl didn't say nothing. Didn't have to. I'd have hadto be dead to not hear that unspoken disgust loud and clear.

Randy chewed on mywords for a moment, his mouth almost working with the thoughts, thenhe grunted again. "Don't let it ride you too much, Joe. Noteveryone is as limped dicked as that son-of-a-bitch." He grinnedand leaned in. "The moment we all realized that Carl weren'theaded over here...well I thought we'd have ourselves a good oldfashioned brawl right here over coffee to see who could get over herefirst."

"What," Igrumbled, not at him but at the whole darn mess, "you stared 'emall down?"

"Naw, I juststood up and walked on over." The laugh that started ended up asa hoarse wheeze. Once he'd caught his breath, Randy finished, "Lazydogs don't get fed."

I almost managed asmile at that. "Guess not." Eased the hurt a little knowingthat not all of them felt like Carl.
Randy grinned back."So, seen any deer lately, deputy?"

For your party, here’s a list of Christmas Cocktail recipes including the Black Santa and Candy Cane Tini or here’s a nice Mocktail for those who don’t imbibe. Add some finger food to start and Christmas Tamales and although they include a recipe, I strongly suggest ordering from your local Abula selling them out of the trunk of her car or shopping cart — seriously. Forget the formal dinner, finger food works best. Some sliced ham and such, your good. I prefer buying a box of assorted pastries from the local Mexican bakery to round things out.

Of course the best of all is NORAD Tracks Santa. You can now track him through Google maps on your smart phone!

We tend to, as authors, sit in our writers’ caves, faces lit by the glow of a computer screen, while losing track of the world around us. We only know each other by online contact and pen names…somehow vaguely aware that there are living, breathing bodies intertwined with those names and they exist within reasonable proximity to ourselves.

Last night, I decided to shuck the virtual and go with the face-to-face.* I invited several authors I know live in the area over to my place for a post Thanksgiving, “Please, God, no more Turkey potluck.” SG made homemade pizza (steak, spicy sausage/pepperoni and a BBQ Chicken). Round about 4 folks started arriving.

Spent a delightful five hours talking life, editors and cover art. Stephanie Vaughn sat on my sink counter while Lex Valentine lounged against my cabinets discussing “how rough was to rough in the anal sex category.” We all critiqued ZA Maxfield as she whipped up an incredible apple/cranberry/feta cheese salad. AM Riley told us about the crazy cops she met while doing ride-alongs in Las Vegas. Devouring forkful by forkful of a strawberry Boston-Cream pie, Zoe Nichols and the eldest daughters of ZA and Lex argued “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob.” My friend Jeff Huntwell and SG hung out with the TV and watched Kick Ass, occasionally swinging into the conversation.

It was fun, it was low-key and we’ll definitely have to do it again.

You let them experience all the shit that something like this would bring up: hate and anger and despair. They’re not brave, they’re not stoic, they’re not strong and understanding. They’re furious and despairing and guilty, oh so guilty. Brandon, not the most stable of people to begin with (as a cop says later, he’s a bottler), just implodes with guilt and fear and hate and inactivity.[...]

My issues with the mystery would normally knock this grade down to a B at least, but the emotional honesty and intensity of this book is too good for anything other than a B+. That’s the power of this series as a whole, but of this book specifically. Thank you for that honesty."

A law professor plans to write about discrimination against bisexuals and transsexuals, and seeks reports.

The discrimination can be in the workplace or by the government (for example, immigration.) It could relate to healthcare. It could originate from the straight or gay side. It could also relate to stereotyping, for example promiscuity, nonmonogamy or spreading diseases. Ideally it would involve illegal discrimination that led or might lead to a lawsuit or settlement. It could also be violation of policy, or something that led or might lead to policy changes. Or where the laws or policies were not protective enough. It would be especially useful if the discrimination related to bisexuals and transsexuals in a way different from how it would affect gays and lesbians.. (For example, a bisexual immigrant divorces, enters a same-sex relationship and authorities question whether the marriage was for immigration purposes, a crime. Or, somehow, it becomes known that an immigrant has both a spouse and a same-sex partner, leading to the same challenge.)

An old blanket striped brown on black had covered his brother's shaking form. Seth curled in the back seat of the police car, purple shadows of bruises mottling his cheek and chin. More, new and old, would be hidden under his clothes.

Seth wasn’t really his brother, but his mother’s cousin’s son. Cousin-brothers, that’s how their world defined them. Only an hour separated them in time. Their mothers held hands as Old Woman Vasquez helped bring two boys screaming into the world. Strength and pain slipped back and forth between the women binding their children forever. Ánaaí Seth, atsilí True, big brother, little brother, in the old ways they would have all shared the same roof because they were tied to each other through their mother’s blood.

As True stood by the police car, a low voice came from behind him, “Tick, wanna talk to me about tonight?”

Everyone called him Tick back then. It had started as a joke when they were very young. Someone had asked for True and his mother snapped that they should find Seth because True would be stuck to him like a tick on a sheep. At first the name had bothered him. After a while it just was another name.

He turned his attention to the officer, directing his gaze somewhere below the man’s right knee. Direct eye contact was too personal to share with this man.

“They say you were here.” The officer was a cousin, his father’s sister’s husband’s cousin, not so close as Seth.

“Yeah.”

True had crawled through the small window into a dank trailer that reeked of motor oil, dogs and mildew. A dingy, narrow mobile home squatted on a plot of desert east of town. Nothing much, but Seth and his Dad called it home. Rank weeds punched through gaps in the skirting. When the wind was up you could feel it thrum under the floor. Seth had sat cross-legged on the mattress, a handful of glossy magazines clutched tightly. Such a prize they had found, kicking around the dumpsters behind one of the bars, dirty magazines. It was as good as candy at Christmas for two teenage boys.

A peek through the half opened door confirmed Martín DelOro, Seth’s old man, was home. They crowded next to each other watching him sprawled in grimy, grey dungarees on the couch. Seth’s dad was half Mexican; the old ways didn’t mean shit to him. Drunk in the front room, Seth’s dad was not one you wanted to be around when he was muy borracho. There wasn’t a time that it hadn’t been so, not that either boy could remember.

Seth closed the door quietly and put his back against the bedstead. Lying on the bed, feet propped against the far wall, True fingered one of the magazines. Pressed so close to Seth, True could smell the wind and sand in his hair.

Seth’s room was hardly more than a closet. Still, he had more privacy than True could even imagine. All of his brothers and sisters slept in the same room. So he came to Seth’s house. It was worth the risk of catching his uncle in a bad mood just to be alone for awhile. Martín’s drinking habits were why they always came and went through the window in Seth’s room.

Voice low so as not to wake the sleeping man, “What’d ya think Tick?” Somewhere from his dad’s mom’s side Seth had inherited golden brown eyes. They flicked furtively over the shiny, black covers with their teasing pictures. Neither had really looked when they found the magazines. There wasn’t time. Just long enough to guess what they had, then grab them from the dumpster and run.

Now, as they flipped through the slick pages, hands damp with excitement, a whole new world exploded before them.

“Whoa crap.” True’s hiss was barely audible. Blonde hair, tan lines and not a whole lot of clothes on those pages. They were all guys, doing things to other guys. Lips touching, hands exploring, mouths and tongues caressing very private places; True had never imagined such things. Then he noticed a blonde on his back with legs in the air and a dark-haired fellow putting himself, well, in there, and suddenly True knew.

He knew why he always wanted to be with Seth. He knew why he got angry and hot inside when Seth flirted with the girls at school. He knew why he dreaded Squaw Dances, with the giggling girls prodded by their mothers to pick good-looking boys like him and like Seth… having to give up his precious nickels and dimes so the girls would leave them alone. Dark desire crawled in the pit of his stomach. Glancing up he met Seth’s gaze. Seth’s amber eyes were hard and hungry. True’s eyes held the same hunger. Both saw. Both dropped their stares. But where their eyes landed was the magazines that told them what they wanted from each other.

Neither could believe what the other’s face said. To commit and say such things was not how they’d been raised. “So that’s what they do to each other?” the words were whispered; giving form to the thought.

“Yeah, I guess,” Seth coughed. “You think it hurts?”

“Stick your finger up there and find out,” True teased. Seth’s boot caught him on the thigh, pushed, trying to shove True off the edge of the bed. True punched him back, hitting his hip. Laughs came out as snorts.

Two men were almost kissing in a full page spread. Holding it up for Seth’s inspection, “What do you think they’re saying?”

Crooning, leaning in, “Oh baby, oh baby,” Seth mimicked the soaps on T.V. True pushed his cousin’s face away. Seth grabbed his hand and True tried to yank it back. He kicked and missed.

“Come on, bro, you can do better than that.” Seth taunted him. Holding his wrist, holding his ankle, the older boy wrested him down, pinned him. Both were laughing and True looked in Seth’s eyes… really looked again. You never stared like that, it just wasn’t done. Hunger, need, everything he felt was echoed back.

His free hand found Seth’s chest, up underneath his shirt. Cold fire burned under his palm, Seth’s pulse drumming in time with his own. True could feel it, knew he could touch Seth this way, be with him always this way, never have to lose him this way. True’s gut tightened, spun, and he felt nauseous. A sharp, searing blow smashed the inside of his head. His ears rang with a terrible, high-pitched whine. Large, glowing, a black light burned before his eyes.

Then it was gone and he was with Seth. Peace, no wanting, no pain, just gentle longing and bliss.

Seth leaned in, his rust brown hair brushing True’s cheek. With Seth’s weight heavy on his body, True pulled Seth hard against his mouth. His first real kiss was with Seth. It was moaning and tongues and not breathing at all. Everything had gone hard and throbbing; hormones rampaging between them.

That’s when Martín lurched through the door.

I've got mine. SG and I talked last night about what is vanilla and what's not in our relationship. For one brief moment Nick forgot just how mad he was and allowed himself to stare in awe at the muscles and the tats and the incredible smile. Then the memory of the previous night reared up. Hinges screeched as he slammed the hood down hard.

“So this is the hearse?” Brandon raised his eyebrows. “Are you sure it’s a restoration project and not a junk yard?”

Nick offered up a thin smile. “Yeah, this is the rust bucket.” As he pushed past Brandon and slid into the front seat, Nick twisted the key in the ignition. The hearse roared to life with a throbbing, primal growl.

“Whoa, she lives, I’m impressed.” Brandon started to reach in and touch Nick’s hair. Nick caught the movement in the rearview, slamming the door shut to stop him. “What the?”

The driver’s window was down, semi-permanently. It had to be physically pulled into place. “Garage door’s open.” He slung his arm over the door and picked at the rotting weather strip. “Wouldn’t want anyone to see us together.”

“Nicky, what’s up?”

“It’s me, not you.” His boot heel drew a red-brown line from the gas pedal back. “Don’t worry about it.” Probably time to order carpeting through Kanter. Probably should get floor panels first… or maybe fix the window and do weather stripping. Shit, there was still a lot to do. He’d hoped a certain someone could help him with that. That’s what he got for letting his fantasies overstep reality.

Both hands on the door, Brandon leaned down to peer at Nick. “About what? Tell me.”

“I’ll get over it.” Mouth set hard, his eyes slid toward Brandon. “Don’t worry about it.”

“Before I leave on Sunday? Come on tell me.” Silence answered him. Brandon switched tactics. “I had a lot of fun last night, at least before everything went to hell.”

“Yeah, you were having fun.” Nick reverted to staring out the windshield.

“You weren’t?”

“At first.” Nick killed the engine. “When we first got to Purgatory and Miri’s birthday that was fun.”

“And...” Brandon prompted.

Nick tried not to let the pain show in his eyes. “Then you went to get a drink at the bar. And you stayed at the bar flirting with that girl. I mean, shit, we haven’t seen each other in two months and you ditch me to chase tail... which, as far as I know, you’re not going to do anything with anyway.”

“Nick, I told you I’m not out.”

“Okay. No!” Nick ran his nails across his scalp. “Not out is no public displays of affection. I can’t tell anyone we’re seeing each other. I get it. It’s bad enough, but I understand why.” His hand slammed the steering wheel. “It is not ignoring me for an hour while you grab some bitch’s ass! You wanna cover... I’m seeing someone. Gee, you’re cute, but I can’t get involved now. I’ve really been looking forward to seeing you again, and that just fucking hurt.”

“Listen, Nicky, I didn’t do it to hurt you. I’m sorry. It’s just habit.”

More black flecks found their way to the floor. “You know what really hurt?”

“What?”

“That your first thought wasn’t me... it was protecting your cover in the easiest way possible.”

“I’m sorry, Nicky. I should have handled it better. All I can do is say I’m sorry.”

“I know. I’ll get over it. Like I said it’s my problem.”

Hard silence broke between them for a time. “No, it’s my problem. I really, really like you, Nicky. It’s been a long time since I felt this way about anybody. Hell, I drove four hours across the desert, pulling bugs outta my teeth to see you.” Nick snorted a laugh. “Let’s not go out tonight. Stay home, just you and I. I’ll give you all the attention you need. I want to. I want to be with you.” Brandon leaned in through the window and turned Nick’s chin with his fingers.

“The garage door’s still open.”

“I know.” Brandon kissed him. Brandon hadn’t shaved yet. Stubble tickled the edge of Nick’s lips. “You broken it in yet?”

He pulled back. “Broken what in?”

“Big ol’ back area…” Brandon’s chin jerked towards the rear of the hearse. “Plenty of room.” Nick’s skin tingled under Brandon’s feather light touch as the other man reached in and pulled the t-shirt over Nick’s head. The black material landed in a pile somewhere near the bike. Holy shit, Brandon was intense. A smile flashed, the latch clicked and the door eased open.

“You’re fucking crazy, you know that?” Nick rolled his eyes, sliding back across the bench. “Jake would never have gone for that. He was always after me to sell it and use the money for a down payment on a Toyota.”

It was almost feral how Brandon moved, crawling across the seat on all fours. “That’s just tragic.” The deep voice was mellow, soothing, sensual. Nick could get off just listening to Brandon talk.

Already things were beginning to tingle and tighten. “Well, this wasn’t his lifestyle.”

“How the hell did you meet him then?” Strong arms were on either side of Nick’s hips as Brandon leaned in.

“He’s part of the fetish crowd, dress up to party on weekends.” Why the fuck was he talking about Jake? Especially with Brandon licking just behind his ear; damn it was really getting hot. “You know, club bleed over and stuff. Otherwise he’s pretty conservative.” A strong hand stroked him through the camouflage. He began to swell in response to the touch. “He thought the Hearse was weird. A sling in his bedroom, okay. A car that used to haul around dead people, gross.”

Brandon’s lips were working down the side of his neck. “I think it’s wicked. What’d ya name her?” Fingers of frost danced under Nick’s skin wherever the kisses landed.

Nick’s skin clung to the vinyl against his back. “Querida.” His own hands were tracing the ridges of Brandon’s biceps, his hips grinding into the caress. “It means ‘I desire you’… it’s what Gomez called Morticia.”

“I always wondered about that. Querida.” The way Brandon said it, Nick knew he wasn’t talking about the car. “Wanna climb in the back and fool around?” Brandon was just too damn sexy to stay mad at for long.

Nick’s breathing was already heavy. The heat in the garage didn’t help. “For a guy who’s not out you certainly like to have sex in some risky places.” Well, not that risky, they were almost sixty feet back from the street and in a garage. Still, if someone were standing at the end of the drive they’d get a show. “Besides, I didn’t bring anything out with me.”

Brandon chuckled. “Cops and Boy Scouts always come prepared.” A thin foil package dropped between Nick’s legs.

He twisted the packet in his fingers, sliding his gaze up to meet Brandon’s eyes. “Make up sex.”

“Oh, hell, yeah, baby.” Burning hard kisses stole what little remained of Nick’s resistance. “One of the best types around.”

When Caesar's brother drags him to a Hollywood hills party in the hopes of netting him a job, Caesar doesn't expect much. He overhears an argument between an incredibly hot guy and who he assumes is the hot guy's girlfriend. Instead, he discovers that the 'girlfriend' is a sister; even better, a sister who's more than happy to help her brother Nate meet someone new. Nate and Caesar have both had too much to drink, and they go back to Nate's place for a round of very hot sex, then collapse for the night. In the morning, hungover, Caesar makes a startling discovery -- Nate is a cop.

Which wouldn't matter so much, except that Caesar's a thief with arrest and conviction records a mile long.

Life being what it is, it doesn't take long for Nate to find out about Caesar's past, but somehow they can't seem to stay away from each other. When Caesar accidentally finds evidence of horrific crimes being committed, his first instinct is to go to Nate for help, an act which kicks off a chain of events even more complicated than either of them could have imagined... and puts both their lives in jeopardy.

This story is a fascinating one; the plot contains enough twists and turns to satisfy the most jaded reader. The characters are interesting and believable, crafted with care. There's also a subtle undercurrent of humor running through the book, as well as a well-balanced collection of sex scenes that are hot and in-character. Contemporary and compelling! Very much recommended.

Trying for casual, but coming off strained, Caesar choked out, “I’m gay.”

She blinked. Her shoulders slumped. “Well, hell, this is Los Angeles. All I ever meet are gay men... or really ugly ones.” Then he got a broad, friendly smile. “So you were watching us fight? That means you were checking out one of the two of us, hmm?” Caesar failed miserably at trying not to be embarrassed. Again, the seductive look came out. “My brother’s single, too.” Her eyes got even brighter. “And we have the exact same taste. We’re twins you know.”

Uhng, he had such a thing for blonds. Especially ones with tight asses and green eyes. The mental image sent his hormones into overdrive. “Really?” His gaze slid toward the door where that sexy, tight ass had disappeared.

“Yep, exactly the same taste in men.” Looking at her empty glass, she sighed. “Come on.” An arm threaded through his. “I need another drink and then I can introduce you.” She smiled. “By the way, I’m Carol.”

He returned the smile. “Caesar.” They stepped back into the house and the crush of people. First he snagged another beer for himself and more wine for Carol. Then they were on the hunt for a blond man with a tight, fine ass. “Are you sure this is okay?”

“Oh, hell, yes.” She smirked, squeezing his bicep. “Trust me, Nate will just adore you. And he’s got to be just frustrated as all hell by now. I bring him to these gigs, he wanders around drooling over everybody, goes home alone and then tells me about what he should have said over the next week. He just needs to get laid. Oh!” With a jerk on his arm, Carol stopped dead. “I didn’t mean it like that. It sounded like I’m pimping him out or something.”

Caesar almost contradicted her, then thought better of it. No sense humoring a drunk too much. “You make him sound pretty desperate.”

“Not desperate.” Mortified, she lifted her glass to cover her mouth. After gulping down more wine, she continued. “The one place we’re not the same,” her free hand fluttered up and down her torso, “besides the obvious, is I’m the party girl. Outgoing. Gregarious. Nate’s more the quiet, shy type. He’s no bumbling virgin, had a few longish relationships.” Blond hair whipped loose as Carol shook her head and led him down a narrow set of stairs. If he remembered correctly there was a game room on the bottom floor. Caesar was very good at memorizing the floor plans of houses he visited, even when he didn’t mean to. “But his current job makes it real hard for him to meet people. They change up his shift a lot.”

Caesar missed a step and had to grab the rail to keep from toppling onto Carol. “What does he do?”

Since she was in front of him, Caesar couldn’t get a read on her face, but he thought she hesitated before responding. “Security.” A shorter pause. “I’ll let him tell you about it. Nate hates it when I ramble about his life to other people.” At the bottom of the stairs she looked back at him and smiled. “I see the wallflower now.”

Caesar did, too: a well-built guy holding up a piece of wall and cradling a beer. The guy absently watched a pool game in progress, in which two chorus-line starlets were skunking a pair of guys. Big, meaty guys in crummy clothes; Caesar pegged them as either grips or set construction.

Carol danced around the pool cues and headed for her brother. “Nate,” she burbled, “you’ve been hiding from me. I want you to meet someone.”

Nate’s whole body slid into a long-suffering slump. Then he rolled his eyes. “You’re drunk.”

“Yep.” She slid under his arm. “And you’re gay.” Bumping his hip she added, “Gay Nathan Reilly meet hot, gay guy Caesar whose last name I don’t know.”

Nate’s green eyes went wide as he glared at his sister. A comic, wide-eyed stare met his, with the addition of a tongue half stuck out of her mouth. If Caesar had any doubts about their twin status, that little exchange of sibling love put them to rest.

“But.” Carol drew out the word. “Who was checking out your butt earlier on the patio.”

This was the most unusual, and funny, introduction Caesar’d ever had. “Hi.” He took a swallow of his beer and hooked his thumb in his jeans’ pocket. “You have quite a sister.”

“You don’t know the half of it.” Nate growled.

Now Carol wiggled out from under her sibling’s embrace. “My work here is done. You’re talking to someone. Ciao, boys.” A finger dance of a wave dismissed them. “Use condoms.”

I was entertaining him this day as his nurse was otherwise occupied. Really it was an excuse for the other adults who thought it odd I attended my son so much. He'd had a small mishap during the night. Not that it was unusual for a child his age, but still the bed had to be righted. Given everything that had happened recently I couldn't believe it hadn't been happening more often. And I felt for him. I had suffered the embarrassment of that problem long after I should have grown out of it. That may have been due to the fathers' supposed cure for my lack of control. They beat me each and every time it happened.

So we'd taken breakfast together. After a game of hide and seek, in which we'd managed to distress practically every servant in the manse, the floor of my room had become a battle ground for an army of chess men. We must have captured the high ground of the bed half a dozen times before Jean-Paul had wearied of that game. Once we quitted the war he had taken me into his confidence about the secret place. Confederates, you understand, share things like that.

Stopping before a large wooden door, he giggled. What wondrous things his giggles were. Bright, eager eyes looked up at me. With both hands he beckoned and I leaned down close. Conspiring with me he whispered, "It's in there."

I knelt beside him and put my arm around his shoulder, drawing him into my body. "What is in there?" I whispered back as I tickled his belly through his vented doublet. We were conspiring after all.

He brushed my hand away. Tickles were not meant for Chevaliers on such important business as secret places. "A maze." Awe dripped in his voice. I was not sure he knew what a maze was, but he was certainly impressed by the thought of it.

"Really? Shall we see it?" He nodded. "Okay then." I stood and grasped the latch. It was one of those heavy iron pieces, the type that took keys the size of a normal man's cock to lock them. Old and cranky as it was, I had to put most of my weight on the lever before it gave.

A few seconds were wasted while I determined that the door opened outwards instead of into the room. Had I but looked at the hinges…thankfully only my son was there to see that. He'd forgive me most any idiocy. Odd, there were brackets for a bar on this side of the door. Why would someone need to bar an interior door in that manner? My palm itched and I rubbed it against my leg. Iron always affects me so. No matter, old buildings such as this were not built to any plan.

A cavernous, empty, circular hall greeted us. It was a dim place of dancing shadows. Indistinct shapes flitted around the darker recesses. A mosaic of red stone tiles wound in and out of the debris littering the floor. A shame the Laird let a room like this go to waste. I supposed it would be hard to heat. It was chill enough now in the midst of summer. With such little windows, up so high, the only light would have to be brought in by torch or candle. I'd become accustomed to the brighter, airier spaces of La Florida.

"Père," Jean-Paul pulled at my sleeve, "Where is it, where is the maze?"

I went down on one knee and swept away some of the dirt and grime. There'd been a floor like this in the Abbaye where I was raised. "See here, on the floor. The labyrinth should start somewhere here, by the door." I pointed to the paving at our feet. "You follow the pattern. When you are all the way through you should be back where you started."

Only a four-year-old could look that disappointed. There was precious little for him to do in this dismal keep. The rain kept him indoors most days. There were no children of his age to play with. The Tacksmen's sons were all young men and his mother claimed it was unseemly to mingle with the crofters' broods, even when they had time away from their chores. At home he often ran wild with Temecuas boys. Adults just weren't much company.

"No, truly, it is fun." I tried to put some enthusiasm in my voice. Taking him by the hand, "Now don't step off the line," I began to walk the pattern, then I turned and caught him by the waist, "don't fall!" He screeched in delight.

We were halfway across the room when I caught the whiff of something not right. Something evil and wrong slid its unseen hands up the back of my legs. A sickly sweet, charnel house smell rose from the tessellate pavement. The room turned bitterly cold.

Jean-Paul whimpered. He'd caught it, too, the sense that we were where we shouldn't have been. A whisper rose in my mind. Disembodied voices engaged in an indecipherable conversation surrounded me. I swept my son into my arms, crushing him against my chest. No words to understand, but the whispers were hateful. They did not want us here. Frozen in fear I could move neither forward nor back. A movement at the limits of my vision caught my attention.

In the fringes of the grey light the shadow of a skeleton slunk up the wall. The outlines of bony fingers and toes sought holds in the stone. Like a bloated spider crawling along its web it crept out onto the ceiling, clinging to the beams radiating from the center. Jean-Paul hissed, "Père?" and I shushed him. Maybe if we didn't move it wouldn't notice we were here.

When it reached the center of the room the foul thing whitened, solidified. I could see the bones and count its ribs. Hours of moments went by as it dangled by its hands and feet above us. With a hideous shriek, echoed in the screams of Jean-Paul and I, it burst into pieces. First the skull, then the other bits of bones rained down upon us. The ossified downpour vanished as it touched the stone.

Stillness, absolute stillness reigned. My son was too scared to cry. His breath came in dry little hiccups. Putain, I was too scared to cry. Speaking more for my own comfort than his, "Shhh, Jean-Paul, it just wanted to frighten us." I began to back towards the door. My boot heels echoed in the empty hall.

And then something else echoed. The heavy sound of the door as it shut behind us. I swung around. A grinding crunch as a key turned the lock. We were locked in. Someone had locked us in. Mon Dieu! Why?

Two breaths and then a low groaning answered me. The whimpers and whines of starving children echoed unseen. Whispered prayers floated about the room. Moans and coughs and vows of revenge, the last solace of the condemned, slipped about me as eager and as deadly as any viper. The invisible dying host pressed against us, robbing the breath from our lungs. Ailpein's ghost story, it wasn't a story. Mère Marie, it wasn't a story.

Horses always ran faster when headed towards their manger, and Fiel was no exception. A wild ride through the bosque brought them to the edge of town where Hector reined him back to fast walk. Not more than a single lane, bordered by loose rock paths, drifted through the pueblo. Whitewashed adobes faced a zocalo filled with scraggly trees and beaten dirt. Holding tight to Hector's waist, they bounced through at a decent clip. When they hit the edge of the small cluster of buildings, Hector spurred the bay into a gallop, heading for home.

Stands of knife leafed agaves wove among saguaro and prickly-pear. Cactus ringed the perimeter of the hacienda, its red clay roof visible as the horse made a rise in the road. It kept all but the most determined marauder out. That, and the thick adobe wall with its broad grease wood gate and broken glass set into the top. Normally, the gates would be shut tight, only a little inset door left open for callers. Today, however, the entry stood open.

Rocks dropped one by one into Martín's stomach. That could only mean one thing. Even Fiel sensed it and, snorting, broke the pace himself. Slowing to a walk, they entered the hacienda courtyard.

As Hector reined their mount to a stop, Martín slid from the back of the animal, adjusting his vest and stamping tight-legged trousers back over his boot tops. He stepped aside as Hector swung out of the saddle and jumped to the ground. When standing together people joked they could hardly tell the men apart, although Hector's fair skin had not been browned by working in the sun, and he cropped his hair short as was the style among important men. Martín carried a few years that the Don did not. But their smiles and the light in their eyes hinted at an unspoken shared lineage.

A young boy, his loose white pants and open shirt billowing, ran to grab the bridle and led Fiel off to the stable. Martín tousled the boy's black hair as he passed, heading toward the crowd that had gathered around the perimeter of the courtyard. Under the eves of the outdoor kitchen, women in Indian blanket skirts, calico tops, and shawls thrown over their heads whispered to each other as they shushed their babies with bounces. Their husbands stood off in tight knots, trying not to look interested. At the center of their attention a carriage rested, its sides covered in tan dust, and a team of horses stood lathered from their pull. In front of that a woman they'd all been waiting months to catch a glimpse of paced. In her wake trailed a dowdy, older matron, fussing and fretting like a mother hen.

Fine, embroidered linen covered the young woman's head and draped about her shoulders. A fringe of ginger curls framed her high forehead. The traveling dress she wore was a demure dark brown, with a high collar for modesty and a cinched waist. Her face could have been beautiful if her expression had not been half so haughty. Lolita Moreau, the soon to be mistress of the hacienda, surveyed her tiny fiefdom as though the peasants might crawl forth and bite her. She snapped a command and her attendant jerked as though whipped.

Off to one side another woman watched. Doña Aritza, Hector's mother, pursed her lips and seemed to be almost in prayer. When she caught sight of Hector and Martín an honest smile broke over her face. Señora Aritza gathered her skirts and headed across the small court toward her son.

"Hector," Martín hissed out of the side of his mouth, "that's your bride?" It was both a question and a show of sympathy. They could only hope the long trip soured her and that it was not her normal disposition.

Hector swallowed. "The painting made her prettier."

"Artists will do that." He nodded, fussing with the scarf at his neck. "If she didn't seem like such a shrew she might fit the image."

With a sigh, Hector held out his hands for his mother, cupping her frail fingers into his palms. "I see the Señorita arrived safely." His tone indicated he rather wished she hadn't.

"Sí, mi'jo, she is here." Señora Aritza's voice echoed agreement with her son's. After a heavy pause, she continued. "Come, let me introduce you." Turning, she led them across the yard, her arm laced through Hector's, Martín following a respectful distance behind.

At their approach, Doña Lolita looked up and smiled. Martín shook off a vision of too many teeth, and reminded himself that Hector was liable to incite smiles in almost anyone. However, when the lady caught sight of Martín standing behind Hector, her dark eyes narrowed and her lips went tight. Apparently, she was not overly fond of the common Mexican. With a final glare in his general direction, Doña Lolita gave her attention back to Señora Aritza.

"My dear," the Señora began, pushing her son slightly forward, "my son, Hector Luz Aritza."

Hector dropped his eyes and stared at his boots. "Muy amable, Señorita. Welcome, I trust your journey was pleasant?"

"Is that any way for a groom to greet his future bride?" The words poured forth like rancid honey. "Staring at the dirt and unwilling to look her in the eye?"

Hector snorted and looked up. "No, you are correct." Turning slightly to catch Martín's eye, Hector raised his eyebrows in question. Martín shrugged. He did not like this woman. It went beyond her demeanor. It went beyond the irrational resentment he had for her…no woman could take Hector from him. Still, something cold slithered down his spine each time she breathed. For a moment the men held each other's gazes: Martín tried to cover his unease and Hector seemed to offer reassurance. Both broke the link at near the same time. Hector's smile tightened as he returned his attention to his bride-to-be. "Welcome to your new home. I hope you will be happy here."

Ignoring the pleasantry, Lolita called, "Tante!" Fingers curled, almost pulling the older woman towards her as with strings, "bring me the gift."

"Gift?" Startled, Hector shifted. His mother patted his arm. Martín stood, suspicion gnawing at his insides.

The wedding gifts had been exchanged months before between the families. Again he shrugged the unquiet off. It was not out of the ordinary for small presents to be exchanged between betrothed. He should have thought to have one prepared in this event. Such things went with his duties as Hector's mayordomo y compañero. Fingering the small, etched coin hung about his neck on a cord, Martín's brain scrambled for an answer. Hector gave him the trinket years ago as a token of his love. Absently, Martín's fingers traced the pattern of a hand holding a heart carved into the surface of the metal.

Ah, well, they hadn't known exactly when the Señorita would arrive. Martín would insure they procured something appropriate before dinner; maybe the crucifix which had belonged to Hector's great-grandmother might be proper.

A soft snick jerked Martín's attention back. The Señorita held the lapel of Hector's jacket with one thin hand. In the other she held a broach, with the pin back sprung. Two open witches' hearts, their tails turned to the left, were crowned in gold. Garnets glittered red. Lolita smiled and leaned in to pin the charm.

"Aye!" Hector jumped back, hand on his chest. Martín stepped to his side, glaring at the woman.

Fox-like eyes narrowed, Lolita stood and watched as a single drop of blood fell from the tip of the pin. Her gaze tracked it as it tumbled to the earth. Then she looked up. "How clumsy of me," she purred, "to stick my husband like that. I must be tired." She folded her hand over the broach. "Perhaps someone could show me to my room."

Jeff was a fuck up. He knew he was a fuck up. He knew it because he was running hell bent across the back side of Doniphan Drive. Sprinting along the boarder between Texas and New Mexico somewhere past two in the morning, the slap of hard soles on the asphalt drove him. His jaw ached. Throbbed was more like it. Stupid moron in the bar had decided to swing a punch and then everyone got mad because he threw one back. Life was just unfair.

What was even more unfair was being hauled out of the pile of arms and legs by Chris Mathers. High school hunk, all around jock: the good boy who went off to college and was going to be someone. Jeff couldn’t even allow himself the luxury of hating Chris. Chris had been nice in a way that the popular kids weren’t supposed to be.

Easy and confident Chris strode through life. In gym, Jeff watched without watching, memorizing how Chris moved. Jeff longed for the odd, off-the-cuff blessing of a smile, and hated himself for doing so. Chris’ voice seeped through his frame during science class. Hidden behind those big ceramic slab counters, Jeff would jack-off in the back row of the lab. No matter how much Jeff tried, oblivious Chris never saw anything, never noticed. What did he expect? Straight arrow described Chris Mathers, in more than one sense. Jeff had always been, and always would be, among the not quite good enough crowd.

Plus he didn’t have tits. Giggling herds of girls swarmed the jock everywhere he went. That’s where Chris’ attention lay.

After graduation, Chris had gone on and up. Everyone expected him to become a banker, lawyer, or doctor. Jeff headed to the State University. He’d graduated. That was the best that could be said for it. Well, and he’d finally accepted himself, which helped him move beyond much of his angsting high school past. Put it all behind and move forward was his motto. So his job was crap, at least he liked himself now. His bosses liked him. Guys at the plant liked him. Sometimes, like tonight, he and a bunch of his co-workers would head out for a beer. Jeff would relax, hang out and for once be part of “the crowd.”

Then some jerk had said the wrong thing in the parking lot. The instigator had been massively ploughed. Jeff hadn’t been feeling much pain either. Enough people egging them on and words went to blows. Jeff happily pounded the assholes face into the gravel until a hard, lean set of arms wrapped around his chest and hauled him off.

He’d spun around, ready to come out swinging, and found himself staring into set of dark brown eyes. Eyes he hadn’t seen in seven years. All the hell Jeff though he’d left behind pushed its way into his not-quite-sober brain. Like an idiot he’d sputtered out, “Hey, Chris, long time, no see.”

Chris hadn’t said anything. He just stared with narrowed eyes and a hard set mouth. Then Jeff’s gaze drifted down over a hard muscled chest. Jeff remembered that chest getting a lot of behind the eyes time in his teenaged stroke fantasies. Whispering sweet nothings, Jeff would ease Chris out of his lettermen’s jacket. He’d watch those dark nipples get hard under a thin t-shirt and then he’d just lick every inch of skin. That chest had gotten him through many a one-handed date.

Unfortunately that chest was now covered in a black uniform shirt. Storm-grey pocket flaps, epaulets and placket under the buttons jarred against the dark background. Gold accents came off as gaudy not military. Silver patches were stitched to straining short sleeves. A thin leather belt crossed from his left shoulder to right hip, sliding under his badge. It all looked like some military dictator’s idea of a joke. And cowboy boots; only in New Mexico could a State Patrol officer get away with cowboy boots.
