<span style="font-size: x-large;">Requiem in Leather (Deputy Joe Book 4)</span><br />
<i>Coming May 15, 2015 from MLR Press </i><br />
<br />
The wilds of San Francisco are a long way from the rural-Utah beat of Deputy Joe Peterson.<br />
<br />
Kabe’s former Dom, the man who protected him in prison, dies and Kabe, along with Jack’s other boys, returns to The City to pay their respects. Joe wonders where he fits in after seeing Kabe at home, with the family and friends he left behind. When he agrees to help track down one of the missing boys he can’t understand Kabe’s aversion to his getting involved.<br />
<br />
The emotions dredged up by the search, and Kabe’s slipping back into his old out-of-control life style, pitch them along like the rough surf Kabe has so missed riding. If they can find the balance between love, respect and their lifestyle, they may just be able to discover a place Joe thought was closed to him forever.<br />
<br />
<br />
Excerpt:<br />
<br />
Kabe’s friends drug him out to see some other folks for coffee, but they’d come back around sometime before nine for a late dinner. That left me and Bill by our lonesome for a bit. We’d started talking about the rest of the week, and he’d mentioned the fair on Sunday, Dore Alley, and asked what I was planning on wearing. When I’d said jeans and a T-shirt, he’d rolled his eyes like Kabe was wont to as he herded me back to the guest room.<br /><br />Now Bill sat on the edge of the bed. “Bones would have liked you to have them.” We’d started the business of finding something for me to wear Sunday.<br /><br />I put the box I’d pulled out of the top of the closet next to him on the bed. “Are you sure?” <br /><br />“Look,” Bill rattled the box, “these things have been collecting dust in my closet for a while. Here and there, I’ve passed on some of Bones’ gear that he’d have wanted people to have. I gave most of his clothes to charity. This stuff, well it’s not exactly what you put in the donation box at Out of the Closet.” Hesitant, as if he weren’t quite ready to face what he’d packed away, Bill took hold of the top. Then he swallowed and pulled it off. “And his leathers, well, they’re more personal, not something I’d want to just hand over to some poser who wants to prance around and look hot.” He set the lid on the pillows and then pointed towards the stuff packed inside, indicating I should take a look. “Bones loved Kabe. Said the most horrible things about him, but if someone needed to go bail that twink ass out of a bar at three in the morning, Bones would be out the door before I hung up the phone. Bones loved Kabe like he was his own. And Kabe loves you. Bones would have liked you…probably would have shown you the ropes.”<br /><br />I shot him a sideways glance before turning to paw through the contents of the box. “The ropes?” Couldn’t quite figure out what was in there that would be proper wear. <br /><br />“From what Kabe’s told me, what I’ve seen of your personality…you walk in the room, you don’t even have to say anything, and all the subby boys start to whimper. You may not ever do clubs or events, but you are one of us.” Didn’t know what us he meant. Although, I had started getting the sense that it weren’t about the props…it was about the people you knew who fancied the same thing. Like church in a way; community from common experience and ideals. <br /><br />He pulled out a strap of something with handcuffs hanging off the end. “Everything I really wanted to keep, I already have in my room. So anything you find in there that you want; take it.” With that, he dropped the bit back in with the rest. “Even if you don’t know what to do with it, but you like it…yours.”<br /><br />I shrugged and kept rummaging through it all. Lots and lots of straps, some with studs or chains. All that flash seemed gaudy, pretentious somehow. “Kabe just wants me to not stand out, I think.” I muttered it kinda under my breath. Don’t know, guess that was just me…big ol’ country mouse in the city. I’da just left it be, were it me, but Kabe wanted it. I don’t think there was nothing I wouldn’t give that boy if’n he asked. Scared the daylights outta me every time I realized that. If he’d said, ‘Joe, go jump off that there building and show me you love me.’ I’da likely done it. “He’d like me to fit in. You know, with his whole tribe.”<br /><br />“Joe,” Bill laughed, “no matter where, no matter what you’re wearing, you’ll stand out. It’s who you are not what’s cupping your package.”<br /><br />I chewed on that bit for a while. Bill left me at my explorations, sitting on the edge of the bed and watching without watching as I pulled things out and put ‘em back. Most felt like horse tack, thick and kinda raw leather. Didn’t like those much. Picked a few things out that seemed things Kabe might appreciate, and that I sorta recognized off Internet pictures: a harness thing that might serve on a mule, a leather jock strap…not too keen on those or wearing one that’d held some other guys dick…muscle man arm bands. <br /><br />Mom said sometimes you gotta wear something just ‘cause it makes you smile and that sure did. ‘Course she was talking about her ol’ pink coat not a black leather arm band near three inches wide with a big ol’ hook lock to keep it together…I don’t know why that one, of all of them, amused me, made me smile. But it did and I set it over to the side by Bill’s knee. Still, I was getting kinda frustrated though, lots’a toys, but nothing I cared for much. <br /><br />Just didn’t want to disappoint Kabe. <br /><br />Then down in the bottom of that box my fingers found something, all rolled up, not folded. Figured I petted it for all of a minute before my brain registered that I wanted it. Didn’t even know what that smooth fine grain grabbing at the ridges on my fingertips was. Almost cool, drew out the warmth of my skin as I ran my hand over it. Nice as any guy’s prick in how it just slid under my palm, warming up as I stroked it. Finally, I pulled it out of the case, find out what I wanted so bad that it made me want to go find Kabe and bend him over before I even laid eyes on it. <br /><br />Almost surprised myself there as I shook what I found out. A pair of jeans. Black leather jeans. Not new shiny leather, but what had all the creases of time and wear etched into ‘em. Balled ‘em into my hands and brought ‘em up to my face. That smell. Lord, nothing smelled quite like leather: heavy, musky, I could almost taste the quality of the hide on my tongue. <br /><br />

There's a mystery to be solved, as well as a lot of family drama and relationship changes and growth for Joe and Kabe. Joe is a wonderful first-person narrator. He comes across as a bit of a redneck and sometimes a bit too stuck on the rules, but inside he's much more. He's a sharp investigator, a loyal lover, son, and brother, and much more emotional than his tough exterior would reveal.</p></blockquote> <p>via <a href="http://www.joyfullyreviewed.com/new-reviews/laying-ghosts-by-james-buchanan">LAYING GHOSTS by James Buchanan | Joyfully Reviewed</a>.</p> <br /> <br /> You may view the latest post at<br /> <a href="http://james-buchanan.com/2013/06/12/laying-ghosts-has-been-joyfully-reviewed/">http://james-buchanan.com/2013/06/12/laying-ghosts-has-been-joyfully-reviewed/</a><br /> <br /> You received this e-mail because you asked to be notified when new updates are posted.<br /> Best regards,<br /> James Buchanan<br /> eroticjames@gmail.comJames Buchananhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875999589111148676noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32200993.post-81710371193765620192013-06-03T21:52:00.001-07:002013-06-03T21:52:08.352-07:00[James Buchanan] Urban Survivalist: Adventures in CheeseJames Buchanan has posted a new item, '<a href="http://james-buchanan.com/2013/06/03/urban-survivalist-adventures-in-cheese/">Urban Survivalist: Adventures in Cheese</a>'<br /> <br /> <p>yeah, actually not my stories.</p> <p>I’m going to start to blog about the attempts to maintain a self sustainable lifestyle in an urban setting which we regularly engage in to varying levels of success. I’ll sort them under the category “urban survivalist,” so if you don’t want to hear about this that’s the category you should unsubscribe.</p> <p>Cheese. We love it, the fresher the better. My guy, SG, has been online looking at Mozzarella making…because he makes homemade pizza (deep and thin — daymn good). So he found a recipe, went to the not quite local beer/wine/cheese making shop in Van Nuys, and got citric acid and rennit tabs (’cause killing a calf and rendering down the stomach lining is not going to happen in the middle of Pasadena). 1gallon of whole milk…from the organic grocer so that it’s pasteurized, but not ultra-pasteurized, and hormone free. About $4, US.</p> <p>Yeah, do the recipe and that gives us two fist size balls of what I would call a solid farmer’s cheese. I can buy 3x as much at Costo for less. And the result is more akin to a mild feta or firm ricotta than anything resembling mozzarella. Good taste, mind you, Princess loves it (and I love anything that will get her to consume dairy) and it’s decent crumbled over a light salad, but it’s not the texture of fresh mozzarella that I’m used to.</p> <p>I like to know the process of a hot milk cheese. There are obviously magical, mojo, shaking rattle steps over the pot elements that the “oh so simple” recipes we’ve found leave out. Those, apparently, are critical to cheese making.</p> <p>This I’ll chalk up to a not quite fail, since we got something edible out of it.</p> <br /> <br /> You may view the latest post at<br /> <a href="http://james-buchanan.com/2013/06/03/urban-survivalist-adventures-in-cheese/">http://james-buchanan.com/2013/06/03/urban-survivalist-adventures-in-cheese/</a><br /> <br /> You received this e-mail because you asked to be notified when new updates are posted.<br /> Best regards,<br /> James Buchanan<br /> eroticjames@gmail.comJames Buchananhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875999589111148676noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32200993.post-76764939108958009142013-05-16T14:08:00.001-07:002013-05-16T14:08:29.026-07:00[James Buchanan] LAYING GHOSTS reviewed Joyfully ReviewedJames Buchanan has posted a new item, '<a href="http://james-buchanan.com/2013/05/16/laying-ghosts-reviewed-joyfully-reviewed/">LAYING GHOSTS reviewed Joyfully Reviewed</a>'<br /> <br /> <blockquote><p>With an unusual hero, great characters, and an interesting storyline, Laying Ghosts is a great read. Laurie Kahn needs our help to finish the film Love Between the Covers.
She just launched a Kickstarter campaign, and if you go to her <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1162698421/love-between-the-covers" href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1162698421/love-between-the-covers">Kickstarter page (lovebetweenthecovers.com)</a> you can see a fun video preview of the film,<br /><br />Love
Between the Covers is a documentary film tackling the diversity and
wonder of the Romance Community and it's impact on lives and literature.
When the film is finished, it will be broadcast worldwide, seen at film
festivals, and used in high school and university classrooms. If this
project is completed, it will help change how the world sees the romance
community. So let’s help her make it happen!<br /><br /> This is a really
exciting project. Laurie is a wonderful film maker, a winner of
primetime EMMY and Peabody awards, who has been collecting footage at
romance <span style="font-family: times new roman;"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">conferences</span></span>,
doing interviews, talking with folks to get the pre-production made.
The lovely thing is she tackles all flavors of romance with no bias and
with a real love for the community. Its a film that really needs to be
made. <br />
<br /> And, heck, look at who the first face you see is :P.<br /><br />The
Kickstarter campaign has a $50,000 goal and a deadline of August 26.
That means we have to get at least $50,000 in pledges by Sunday the
26th (ie in the next 26 days) or we receive NONE of the money that has
been pledged! If we raise more than $50,000 by that deadline, we will be
allowed to keep EVERYTHING that has been pledged. So every gift really
matters. It's crucial to mobilize people who want this project to
happen in the next few weeks! I know Laurie would be grateful for any
donation you could give, no matter the size. <br /><br />
Love Between the Covers is part of the larger Popular Romance Project,
and the footage Laurie and her crew are shooting for Love Between the
Covers will also be used at a symposium about the deep roots of popular
romance at the Library of Congress, in nationwide library programs about
popular romance run by the American Library Association, and at a huge
website looking at popular romance across time and cultures. You can
already check out the prototype of that website at
PopularRomanceProject.org – it’s well worth visiting.<br /><br />
The campaign has to raise $50,000 in pledges by Sunday August 26th or
she gets NOTHING. If she raises more than $50,000 by that deadline,
she’ll get to keep EVERYTHING that has been pledged. So every gift
really matters. And this is a romance community, we're hundreds of
thousands strong. If everyone pledged a buck, she'd make the goal and
then some!<br />
<br />Laurie has asked for $50,000, but she actually needs more than that
to complete the film and keep the Popular Romance Project moving
forward. So don’t stop giving if the $50,000 mark is reached! (She is
$200,000 short of what she needs to complete the film, launch it in the
world, plan the symposium, and keep <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.PopularRomanceProject.org" href="http://www.popularromanceproject.org/">PopularRomanceProject.org</a> alive and growing.)<br />
<br />
Now, there's also perks for pledges: For a pledge of $35, someone who
pledges can pre-buy a copy of the film, and also get a credit at the
SUPPORTER page of the Popular Romance Project website and a fabulous
magnetic bumper sticker. There are other gifts, too. Laurie is
offering a wide range of donor gifts at Kickstarter, including copies of
the film, first chapter critiques, a thank-you in the film credits, and
tickets to the film premiere. Project supporters can give as little as
$1, or as much as $5,000. For $5,000, Laurie will fly to the donor's
hometown before the film is broadcast for an intimate private film
premiere with the donor's friends/family/readers, where she’ll answer
any and all questions!James Buchananhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875999589111148676noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32200993.post-87392380769461282122012-07-17T20:39:00.000-07:002012-07-17T20:39:06.010-07:00Cool video with me on the Popular Romance ProjectAnother video where I share the light with Susan Brockmann, Brenda

<blockquote> I took your question to award-winning gay-erotica author James Buchanan, whose audience is largely female. “The men are free to explore their roles and enjoy each other without this omnipresent sound track of what society ‘expects,’” Buchanan said. “And female readers can choose to identify with either, or both, protagonists in the story.”

Right guy. Wrong time.<br />
<br />
Deputy Joe Peterson understood the risks when he got involved
with ex-con Kabe Varghese. He didn't, however, see fit to warn Kabe.
Now, in the middle of searching for the killer of a local boy, he
has to contend with his career and his relationship spinning out
of control. Solving the case may be easier than repairing broken
trust.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Ain't nothing like
the mountain air first thing in the morning. As I swung out of my new
department issue Explorer, I could almost taste the first touch of
snow on my tongue. Wouldn't be long before winter hit. That meant
skiing, Christmas and snuggling up next to my Kabe's fine body under
a layer of quilts. Not that I needed much excuse to do that. Three,
sometimes four, nights a week he spent over at my place...and boy
didn't the gossips like to pass that bit around.<br />
<br />
No sense ruining my
day thinking on that.<br />
<br />
I headed on into the
oldest dinner in Panguitch, nodding as I walked into the café and
getting a round of grunts and, "Hi, Joe." in return .
A few other folks I said howdy to even though I knew I'd get nothing
but glares back. Didn't mean I still shouldn't be polite. Slid into
my usual booth in the back corner so's I could watch everyone coming
and going. I didn't bother to order nothing. Jane, at the front
counter, just always seemed to know what I was in the mood for and
brought it on out to me.<br />
<br />
A knot of men
clustered around the big table, all of them with heads down and
trading low whispers. If'n I didn't know every last one of them and
what they were up to, I'da been suspicious. But they all either made
their living off the big hunts or liked to pretend they did. Hunting
season meant stingy strategy sessions rivaling those of warring
nations. Everyone trying to figure what each other knew about where
the game was and each trying not to let spill what he'd figured
already.<br />
<br />
After a few bites
into my pancakes, I caught Carl Haley standing up out of the group of
hunting guides and wannabes. He stretched. He hemmed and hawed a bit
about going. Then he pulled out a few bills, tossed them on the table
and...<br />
<br />
...walked out.<br />
<br />
I actually dropped
my fork. Slipped right out of my hand. I think the big table, well,
all them just froze in place halfway through whatever they was at.
See, 'cause all that play outta Carl, at this time in September,
usually prefaced him sauntering on back, sliding into the opposite
side of the booth and grinning out, "So, seen any deer lately,
deputy?"<br />
<br />
Going on five
seasons of that-me being something of an informant of sorts. Came
with my job and being up and around long before the butt crack of
dawn driving my patrol route along the highways and roads in a county
that didn't have hardly one person for every square mile of land.<br />
<br />
<br />
Elk, deer, moose;
saw 'em all the time, everywhere. And I kept it in my head and gave
it off to Carl from about start of fall on through hunting season.
For that, I always had a little bit of something in my freezer ,
and if I got a permit in the local lottery then Carl would take me
out.<br />
<br />
I cain't say how it
even hit me right then. My mind just kept backfiring on how he'd
pretty publicly snubbed not only me, but a decent professional
association. And Carl wasn't even a member of the Latter Day Saints,
just a cowboy, one who apparently let his prejudices rule his wallet.
Sorta set me down into this whirlpool of really black thoughts. Most
times something like this happened-you know after everything hit the
fan about me liking guys and shacking up with an ex-con pretty boy
and getting excommunicated-I managed to just stick it in my pocket.
But there's those you expect it from ,
and then those that hit you blindside.<br />
<br />
Carl caught me off
guard.<br />
<br />
As I'm all wrapped
up in that, staring at a plate of pancakes that are getting less
appetizing by the moment, I heard somebody's butt slide into the
booth. "Morning, Joe." Rough voice, paved like country road
asphalt and varnished with years of smoke-Randy Small. I looked up.
He saluted me with his coffee mug. "Mind if I join you?"<br />
"Sure you want
to?" Yeah, I was right ready to dive into a little pity party.<br />
<br />
"If Carl's
going to let his uptight ass keep him from good info..." With a
roll of his eyes, Randy let the rest of that thought slide on by. He
took a few swigs of his coffee. Me, I just tried to remember how to
breathe again. Finally, Randy grunted, "Your flapjacks are
getting cold."<br />
<br />
I pushed them away.
"Not all the hungry right now." The whole thing soured my
stomach even if Carl didn't say nothing. Didn't have to. I'd have had
to be dead to not hear that unspoken disgust loud and clear.<br />
<br />
Randy chewed on my
words for a moment, his mouth almost working with the thoughts, then
he grunted again. "Don't let it ride you too much, Joe. Not
everyone is as limped dicked as that son-of-a-bitch." He grinned
and leaned in. "The moment we all realized that Carl weren't
headed over here...well I thought we'd have ourselves a good old
fashioned brawl right here over coffee to see who could get over here
first."<br />
<br />
"What," I
grumbled, not at him but at the whole darn mess, "you stared 'em
all down?"<br />
<br />
"Naw, I just
stood up and walked on over." The laugh that started ended up as
a hoarse wheeze. Once he'd caught his breath, Randy finished, "Lazy
dogs don't get fed."<br />
<br />
I almost managed a
smile at that. "Guess not." Eased the hurt a little knowing
that not all of them felt like Carl.<br />
Randy grinned back.
"So, seen any deer lately, deputy?"<br />
